Berlin has the Highest Proportion of Women in Top Public Positions
Berlin’s women in leadership position - more than any other federal state
July 16th, 2024Berlin has the highest proportion of women in public top positions. More than a third of top positions in public enterprises in Berlin are occupied by women - more than in any other federal state.
Compared to other federal states, Berlin has the most women in leadership positions in public enterprises. Nearly 35 percent of all executives in state-owned companies are women, according to a study by the private Zeppelin University. The national average is around 22 percent.
A total of 101 public enterprises in Berlin were identified in the study, with 127 individuals working in so-called top management positions. Of these, 53 were women. However, the proportion of female executives in Berlin has decreased compared to a previous study by the university. Last year, it was about 2.5 percentage points higher.
The study examined 1,420 municipal companies in 69 cities across Germany, where the public sector holds the majority. Of the 2,087 positions on the board, executive management, or management, 461 were occupied by women. The study included the city-states and state capitals, as well as the four largest cities per federal state based on population.
