Berlin Celebrates European Union Day
April 28th, 2014
News from Berlin - Berlin will celebrate European Union Day (May 9th) for an entire week. It was on this day in 1950 that Robert Schuman presented his proposition for a united Europe. This year “Europe Week” will be celebrated from May 3rd to May 11th in Berlin, with presentations, festivals and lectures. Numerous representatives of the EU in Berlin will present the diversity of Europe to German citizens. Concerning the public, this year the event will be free for all citizens.
According to the European Calendar, 98 events will to be held. Those of particular importance are the events presented by FEZ-Berlin (Center for Families and Youths), with activities for the whole family. Several lectures will also be held, such as the one held by the Greek EU Council Presidency, on May 9th at the Europäische Akademie Berlin. These events are particularly relevant in view of the upcoming elections for the European Parliament.
In her welcoming speech Hella Dunger-Löper, EU representative for Berlin and also representative for Citizens Engagement, highlights the importance of citizens being active in European policy. Each decision made in Strasbourg and Brussels influences our everyday life. Particularly in Berlin, since the EU has had an essential role for the growth of the city, thanks to its investments in infrastructure and socio-cultural fields. The omnipresence of the European Union in Berlin is striking and Berlin, compared with any other city, is incredibly connected to the EU historically, politically and culturally.
