Austria Elevates Civic Space and Building Culture at Architekturage 2026
Nationwide architectural festival highlights everyday public infrastructure and urban engineering design

In a major cultural showcase celebrating urban design and civil engineering, Austria’s nationwide biennial festival, Architekturtage 2026, officially launches today with an exclusive opening event. Running from May 28 to 30 under the central motto "What Connects Us – Everyday Infrastructures," the public festival is set to highlight the cultural, social, and technological significance of building design.
The festival is curated and organized through a collaborative partnership between the Federal Chamber of Civil Engineers, regional chambers, and the Architecture Foundation Austria. Ten prominent cultural architecture institutions are driving the program, opening spaces to the public that are typically closed, such as the Latschau power plant, the Ahrental recycling center, urban subway construction zones, and various major clean energy facilities.
The high-profile opening ceremony begins today at 17:30 at the Architekturzentrum Wien, establishing a creative forum for architectural diplomacy and discourse. The event kicks off with an international keynote address by Viennese-Parisian architect Dietmar Feichtinger and engineering expert Apolline Couret from Paris, who will dissect the vital, cross-border creative collaborations shaping modern architectural and structural engineering.
Following the keynote, an expert panel will explore infrastructure through diverse specialized lenses. Featured speakers include space architect Barbara Imhof, landscape architect Carla Lo, architectural journalist Maik Novotny, and building culture expert Elias Molitschnig. This panel aims to bridge public curiosity with expert insight, showing how physical systems frame daily societal connections.
A central highlight of the 2026 edition is the «Open studio 2026» initiative on May 28, where more than 50 professional offices across Austria—including prominent firms like BWM Designers & Architects and the next enterprise architects—will open their doors for public tours and presentations. The festival concludes on June 10 with a special satellite event aligned with the New European Bauhaus Festival.
