The Australian Embassy to Austria marked Harmony Week as a time to remember and reflect on the struggles against racism and prejudice. The observance was presented as an opportunity to acknowledge the continuing importance of confronting racial discrimination and promoting a society grounded in equality, respect and fairness. Harmony Week aligns with the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD), observed annually on 21 March. This day commemorates the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre in South Africa and the subsequent call by the United Nations for international solidarity with those working to eliminate racial discrimination around the world. By drawing attention to this international observance, the Embassy underscored the significance of remembrance and reflection, while also highlighting the broader global effort to oppose racism and prejudice in all forms.
The Embassy also recalled an important milestone in Australia’s own legal and institutional response to racial discrimination. Australia’s ratification of the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in 1975 led to the passing of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975, the country’s first law to actively address racial discrimination. This development was described as a significant step in promoting equality, respect and fairness, and remains an important part of Australia’s legislative and social framework in this area. The reference to this milestone placed Harmony Week within a longer historical and institutional context.
The Embassy further noted that this year’s Harmony Week takes place at a challenging time, both domestically and internationally. Against this backdrop, it emphasised the importance of standing in solidarity and reinforcing the values of social cohesion, understanding and inclusion. These principles were identified as fundamental to Australia’s multicultural society and to the way in which Australia engages with the world. The message conveyed the relevance of these values not only in times of stability, but especially in periods of uncertainty and division.
