News from Berlin - The Australian Embassy and the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin will host a joint event next Monday, May 19th. The event, entitled ‘How Asia is Reshaping our World’, will be a lecture and discussion with Professor Michael Wesley, Director of the School of International, Political and Strategic Studies at Australian National University. The event will be moderated by Markus Jachtenfuchs, Professor of European and Global Governance at the Hertie School, a leading English speaking university in Germany and an international teaching and research center of excellence.

The momentum and scale of Asia’s economic development since the start of the 21st century has been unprecedented, never before seen by the international community. This growth has brought an end to the period in which international affairs were determined mostly outside of Asia. The Asian continent currently holds 60% of the world’s population, and within the next few decades it will provide more than half of the world’s economic output, using more energy than the rest of the world combined.

This lecture and discussion will examine the security dynamics that coincide with this rapid growth: enhanced economic interdependence within Asia, the sudden, systemic rise in energy dependence, the emergence of new “Asian” forms of capitalism and global governance, and the new geopolitics of Asia. Prof. Michael Wesley has published several books on foreign policy, winning the 2011 John Button Prize for Best Writing in Australian Politics for his book, ‘There Goes the Neighborhood: Australia and the Rise of Asia’. Prof. Wesley also served as Co-Chairman of the Security and Prosperity working group at the Australia 2020 Summit in 2008. The event will take place at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin Mitte on May 19th, beginning at 6pm.
