“Art in Residence” Programme at the German Embassy in Sierra Leone
Monthly cultural series brings together Sierra Leonean, German and international artists
August 21st, 2025The German Embassy in Freetown has launched its cultural programme “Art in Residence”, a recurring initiative that turns the embassy into a creative meeting space. Conceived as an open forum for artistic dialogue, the programme invites Sierra Leonean, German, and international artists to engage in conversations across disciplines. Literature, cinema, music, visual arts, fashion, and performance all find a place within this dynamic platform, offering the public an opportunity to explore culture in its many forms.
The format of “Art in Residence” is designed to be participatory and interactive. Every last Thursday of the month, the embassy welcomes guests to take part in discussions, film screenings, and collaborative exchanges with cultural practitioners. By fostering dialogue between local and international artists, the programme highlights the richness of Sierra Leone’s creative scene while connecting it to global conversations in the arts. The embassy emphasizes that the initiative is not simply about presentation, but about building a network of exchange and collaboration.
One of the recent highlights of the programme was the screening of the German film “Toubab” on July 17, 2025. The screening attracted a lively audience and was followed by a discussion about identity, belonging, and the power of cinema to spark reflection on contemporary social issues. Events such as these illustrate the programme’s commitment to presenting works that are not only artistically compelling but also socially relevant. In this way, “Art in Residence” creates a space where cultural production can resonate with local realities while encouraging global dialogue.
Participation in the programme is by invitation only, with limited capacity on a first-come, first-served basis. The embassy has expressed its interest in receiving suggestions for future editions, encouraging community input to keep the series open, diverse, and innovative. This collaborative spirit ensures that “Art in Residence” remains a flexible platform, shaped by both artists and audiences.
By bringing together creative voices from Sierra Leone, Germany, and beyond, the German Embassy’s “Art in Residence” programme strengthens cultural ties and builds mutual understanding through the arts. With its combination of screenings, performances, and discussions, the initiative has already established itself as a valuable cultural forum in Freetown, one that bridges local traditions and international perspectives.
