Annemarie Heinrich Exhibition Opened in Berlin
Showcasing the portraits of a pioneering German-Argentinian photographer
July 29th, 2024On 19 July, 2024, the Ibero-American Institute in Berlin hosted the opening of the exhibition “From Berlin to Buenos Aires: photographer Annemarie Heinrich (1912–2005) and Argentinian literary life”, in collaboration with the Argentinean Embassy in Berlin. At the opening of the exhibition, there was a talk with the photographer and son of Annemarie Heinrich, Ricardo Sanguinetti (in Spanish).
The German-Argentinian photographer Annemarie Heinrich has marked modern photography in Argentina with her portraits of the artistic and cultural scene of Buenos Aires and her experimental works. She was one of the most famous photographers in South America. Her paintings hang in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and in the MoMA. In her native Germany, however, they have never been shown - until now.
The exhibition features reproduced portraits of writers such as the Chilean Pablo Neruda, who lived in Buenos Aires for a long time, Jorge Luis Borges or Maria Elena Walsh. These images capture the rich literary life of the Argentine capital at that time, complemented by a selection of works from the library funds of the Ibero-American Institute.
The exhibition accompanies an extensive retrospective of Annemarie Heinrich at the Willy-Brandt-Haus in Berlin (from 19 July to 29 September 2024) as well as a showcase of her portrait photographs from Argentina's vibrant film, music, and cabaret scene at the Argentine Embassy in Berlin (from 4 September to 25 October 2024). The exhibition "Annemarie Heinrich - Photographs between Germany and Argentina 1933- 1987" opened on 19 July at the Willy-Brandt-Haus in Berlin with more than 120 photographs from her work. In addition to her famous portraits from Argentina's artistic and entertainment scene and some vintage prints, the exhibition also includes classic abstract and emblematic black-and-white photographs, nudes, self-portraits and series on Buenos Aires, ballet and working women.
