Ambassador Armando Varricchio presented Dr. Martin Maischberger, Deputy Director of the Classical Antiquities Collection at Berlin’s State Museums, with the prestigious title of “Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia” on November 7, 2024. The honor, conferred by Italian President Sergio Mattarella, recognizes Dr. Maischberger’s dedication to classical antiquities, especially Roman history, and his promotion of Italian culture and language.

A long-time collaborator with the Italian Embassy, Dr. Maischberger has fostered cross-cultural dialogue by bridging ancient and contemporary art and strengthening ties between Italian and German museums. He also played a key role in negotiating the return of 24 Apulian vases to Italy earlier this year, a milestone agreement signed in June.

Ambassador Varricchio praised Dr. Maischberger’s efforts, highlighting the profound role of culture in shaping national identity and the enduring connection between Italy and Germany through shared cultural heritage. The event underscored the importance of preserving and celebrating the rich histories that unite the two nations.
