From 1 October 2025 to 27 February 2026, the Goethe-Institut San Francisco hosts BLACK IN BERLIN, the North American premiere of an acclaimed photographic exhibition by Berlin-based artist Yero Adugna Eticha. The exhibition, presented free to the public, highlights the rich tapestry of experiences of Black communities in Berlin through a compelling collection of more than 590 intimate black-and-white portraits. This cultural initiative reaffirms Germany’s commitment to fostering cross-cultural dialogue, promoting inclusive narratives, and strengthening ties with international partners.

BLACK IN BERLIN is rooted in the lived experiences of the artist’s subjects and emerged from Berlin’s social landscape, notably tracing its origins to the Black Lives Matter demonstrations in 2020. The exhibition offers audiences in the United States an opportunity to engage with German contemporary art and to reflect on shared questions of identity, representation, and community resilience. By foregrounding visual narratives that resonate with both German and international audiences, this initiative exemplifies how cultural diplomacy can transcend borders and foster mutual understanding.

The Goethe-Institut, as the Federal Republic of Germany’s global cultural institution, plays a central role in advancing Germany’s cultural diplomacy by building bridges between societies through language, arts, and shared learning experiences. BLACK IN BERLIN underscores this mandate by bringing a Berlin-created project to American audiences, thereby facilitating intercultural exchange and dialogue. Such programs reflect broader German foreign policy objectives that emphasize cultural cooperation as a means to strengthen enduring partnerships and shared values with the United States.

Situated within a long tradition of cultural exchange between Germany and the United States — including events like the Deutschlandjahr USA public diplomacy campaigns that have showcased German culture across the U.S. — the BLACK IN BERLIN exhibition reinforces bilateral ties by inviting reflection on diversity and inclusivity. Germany’s engagement through the Goethe-Institut complements diplomatic efforts to promote democratic values and cultural connectivity, helping to deepen mutual understanding across communities. Such initiatives serve as soft-power investments that strengthen the transatlantic partnership at a time of evolving global challenges.
