8th Contemporary Art Biennale in Berlin to Start Today

News from Berlin - On May 28th will start the 8th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art. The Colombian-Canadian artist Juan A. Gaitan will be the curator of this year Biennale, which will last until August 3rd.

The Berlin Biennale is a contemporary art exhibition founded in 1996. It takes place every two years in various location of Berlin. It is the second most important contemporary event of Germany, just after Documenta (a contemporary exhibition held every five years in Kassel). The Berlin Biennale is support by the German Federal Culture Foundation.

The goal of the Biennale is to organize an international contemporary art in Berlin and to draw attention on young artists, who have the opportunity to expose their work during the Biennale. According to the Biennale Foundation website, the aim is also to “established an open space that experiments, identifies and critically examines the latest trends in the art of world”.

The 8th Berlin Biennale is dedicated to the memory of German photographer Michael Schmidt (1945-2014), who was born and died in Berlin. He made a famous exhibition in 1973 entitled Berlin Kreuzberg and received the Pictet price in 2014. This year more than fifty artists would be invite to exhibit their works.
