5th European Union – League of Arab States Ministerial Meeting

Promoting institutional and political collaboration between the two organizations

On February 4, 2019 took place the fifth European Union (EU) - League of Arab States (LAS) ministerial meeting in Brussels.

The meeting was co-chaired by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit and Sudan Foreign Minister Al-Dirdiri Mohamed Ahmed Chairman of the Arab League Ministerial Council.

The ministerial meeting provided an opportunity to examine the progress made in EU-LAS relations and to discuss the best ways to unite efforts to address regional issues of mutual interest.

Discussions focused on strategic and institutional cooperation as well as on political cooperation between the two organizations, highlighting the importance of strengthening cooperation between the EU and the Arab world as an important strategic partner in the Southern Neighbourhood of the Union. The meeting provided an opportunity for an exchange of views on political issues of common interest, as well as an assessment of the political, economic and social climate in the Arab world since the last EU-LAS ministerial meeting (Cairo, 20 December 2016). Discussions also focused on identifying common action paths for managing current tensions and regional instability.
