21st UNESCO World Heritage Day Celebrated
National events promoted peace and mutual understanding through shared cultural legacies.

On June 7, 2026, the 21st annual UNESCO World Heritage Day was held across 55 sites throughout Germany. The German Commission for UNESCO and the Association of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Germany organized the nationwide event under the central theme “Together for Peace and Understanding”. This celebration aimed to highlight these locations as vital venues for peaceful encounter and mutual respect for diverse cultural and natural histories.
The official national launch of the event took place in the Old Town of Regensburg, which simultaneously marked its 20th anniversary as a protected site. Throughout the country, participating institutions provided a diverse program featuring special guided tours, exhibitions, and interactive activities specifically designed for children and young people. These initiatives brought the guiding principles of the UNESCO Constitution to life by fostering an atmosphere of open and respectful exchange.
Significant activities were centred in the SchUM sites of Speyer, Worms, and Mainz, which represented unique Jewish cultural heritage along the Rhine. Visitors were granted free admission to the Jewish Museum Worms and the SchPIRA Museum, while the “SchUMobil” mobile visitor centre offered an engaging way to learn about local traditions. The evening concluded with the “CHAI” music festival in Speyer, featuring a literary concert with works by prominent writers such as Heinrich Heine and Paul Celan.
Beyond local celebrations, the day served to underscore the global nature of protected heritage. The German Commission for UNESCO emphasised that these sites belong to all of humanity, transcending national, religious, and cultural boundaries. Organisers used “World Heritage Sites Markets” and various digital offerings to demonstrate how international cooperation and collective responsibility remain essential for the long-term preservation of these exceptional places.
