News from Berlin - The cultural sector’s main challenge is the accessibility and publicity of the world’s diverse and rich cultural heritage, making it available for all. New technologies can enable to undertake this wider challenge, and democratize the treasures of the museums.

In 2011 Google pioneered this trend by creating the ‘Google Cultural Institute’. Google partnered with hundreds of museums and institutions all over the world to archive and host the world’s most precious cultural treasures online. Not only does it allow more accessibility for the world’s heritage, but also enables display of an even larger part of the museum collections.

As a part of this initiative, Google launched the Art Project in February 2011, partnering with 17 international museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York or the Tate Gallery in London, and a large panel of other museums world-wide. Accordingly, over 40.000 high-resolution images of works ranging from oil on canvas to sculptures and furnitures coming from more than 40 countries are available for visits online.

Berlin’s most renowned museums, the Alte Nationalgalerie and the Gemäldegalerie, as well as some smaller ones participated in the project, and you can therefore use the Google tool to explore their collections, sometimes even up to the brushstroke level to contemplate incredible details.
