News from Berlin - On Thursday, March 27th, the Fifth Bruges European Business Conference took place.

The conference was hosted by the College of Europe in partnership with Deloitte. The purpose of the conference was bringing European political as well business leaders together to discuss the future of the European Union.

Wolfgang Schäuble, the German Federal Minister since 2009, was one of the speakers at the conference. The topic of his keynote speech was: ‘Strategy for European recovery’. Schäuble gave the three main important things for European recovery, namely: achieving sustainable growth, reducing economic imbalances and fighting unemployment.

The German Federal Minister also spoke about a forward-looking recovery which will generate innovation and will create new jobs that are in need. Europa must strengthen his power and therefore make decisions on European level. The past years the fiscal and economic polies and Europe have become more binding and created good conditions for the European recovery. Schäuble says: ‘To achieve sustainable growth, we also need to press ahead with the regulation of the financial markets. We want to reduce risks to the system and eliminate false incentives in the future.’

A fresh debate on how to end the current malaise of the European Union, especially with the impending elections to the European Parliament ahead, are an important topic to discuss. That is why there was given a platform to speakers who represented all mainstream political views.
