This past April, eight U.S. government officials formed the first official delegation to the annual March of the Living that takes place at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps. The officials included the U.S. Ambassador to Germany, Poland, Israel, Spain, the Holy See, and Switzerland.

The March of the Living takes place every year around late April in Poland. The March’s stated objective is to “study the history of the Holocaust and to examine the roots of prejudice, intolerance, and hatred.” Before 2019, the United States had never sent an official delegation to this march.

For these eight U.S. ambassadors, their attendance signified a public declaration by the United States against anti-Semitism. After these officials participated in this march, they traveled to Israel, where they learned about the land, its history, and its security challenges.
