From the 3rd to the 7th of February the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin will host the 28th edition of this famous festival, that has turned into an essential event in the calendar of media art professionals, artists and students from all over the world. The festival events involve an exhibition, live performances, a film and video programme but also symposiums and workshops with the goal of educating people and allowing them to explore and reflect upon their everyday relationships with technology and encourage a critical understanding of art, culture and politics in a society very influenced by the media.

While the video category covers short films, retrospectives and documentaries, the performance category instead focuses on forms of expression that combine art installation with sound, performance and live video. Regarding the conferences and workshops, they depart from the festival theme in order to explore the critical dimensions of networking, hacktivism, media theory and the politics of technological development. The workshops provide participants with the possibility to explore different concepts in both practical and theoretical ways, through speakers who are academics, artists and critics and all well known in their respective fields.

This festival began in 1988 and annually presents 20,000 visitors with an extensive range of exhibitions, conferences, screenings, performances and publications. The Transmediale Festival is also involved in other projects, like the CTM Festival, a festival for contemporary electronic music that will be in the same place and period of the Transmediale one. Furthermore, throughout the year, Transmediale publishes a magazine that aims to expand the festival themes and transfers into other fields. It is also involved with a thematic newspaper and an online journal “A Peer Reviewed Journal About” in collaboration with the University of Aarhus.
