News from Berlin. Next week sees the Philippine Embassy in Berlin host a presentation by Dr. Marlies Salazar titled “Perspectives on Philippine Languages: Five Centuries of European Scholarship”. The event, which takes place on March 28, sees the author present her book which recently received the National Book Award of the Philippines in the field of social sciences. Salazar’s work is widely seen as the first holistic and in-depth analysis of European studies on Philippine languages by Dutch, French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish linguists. The fact that the Philippines uses 120 languages makes this an extensive body of work, especially as the author also puts her findings in the context of the country’s history, which has been dominated by Spanish colonization and American influence. Marlies Salazar studied in Berlin, Paris and Leiden, whilst she has also conducted research and obtained a Ph.D. from the University of the Philippines. The lecture is being organized by the Berlin International Women’s Club and the University of the Philippines Alumni Association Germany and promises to offer an interesting and extensive insight into Philippine culture and languages.
