On the 11th and the 12th of April the Arabic movie festival is took place in Berlin. Four movies were projected: Love, theft and other entanglements, Theeb, Very big shot and the already famous Much Loved. Indeed, the last one is a French-Moroccan movie directed by Nabil Ayoud that has made the headlines because it deals with prostitution in Marrakesh.

The movie was forbidden in Morocco last year. Though they did not create such a headline, the other movies deal with polemical subjects as well like Palestine with Theeb. The movies are projected in the original version with English subtitles, which can be surprising because neither French nor German can be understood by as many people as English. The Center expects therefore a largely international audience.

This movie festival is therefore the occasion to shed light on the not very well known Arabic cinema and to give Berliners and foreigners in Berlin the opportunity to discover it.

Besides, it is interesting to note that the Centre Français de Berlin is deeply linked to the history of the relationships between France and Germany as it was first operated by the French militaries from the World War II to the fall of the Berlin wall. It is situated in the former French-dominated area, mostly around what is now known as the district of “Wedding,” this is the reason why the projections take place at the City Kino Wedding.

Thanks to this movie festival, the Centre Français is enabled to share the culture of its former colonies and to export it abroad. Thanks to their common history, those countries organize events and share each other's culture.
