The 16th International Batumi Conference "Georgia's European Way"

Vice-President of the German Bundestag, Claudia Roth, met with Sophie Katsarava, Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Georgian Parliament

This year, the Batumi International Conference was dedicated to its 10th Anniversary since the launch of the Eastern Partnership in 2009.

The Batumi International Conference which took place on 11th and 12th of July, discussed the major areas of cooperation and further actions for strengthening and advancing the European integration processes beyond 2020. The participants of the conference deliberated on the processes of democratic transformation, developments in the Black Sea security and on-going conflicts in the region.

During the conference, the chairwoman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Georgian Parliament, Sophie Katsarava, met with Vice-President of the German Bundestag, Claudia Roth. They discussed the partnership between Georgia and Germany both in a bilateral and a multilateral context. Sophie Katsarava underlined the importance of reforms that Georgia has successfully implemented and is currently implementing on the path of integration with European and Euro-Atlantic structures and expressed her gratitude for Germany’s support. She also reminded about the difficult situation regarding human rights and humanitarian conditions in the Russian-occupied areas of Georgia, Abkhazia and the Zchinvali region known as South Ossetia. Vice-President of the Bundestag, Claudia Roth, underlined the relevance of the Eastern Partnership and Georgia's pioneering role in the Eastern Partnership.

The Ambassador of Georgia in the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Ing. Elguja Khokrishvili, the members of the German Bundestag Christoph Ploss (CDU) and Matern von Marschall (CDU) were also present at the Batumi conference. The diplomats exchanged views on trade relations and deepening political and economic links between the EU and Georgia.
