German-Tanzanian relations are good and wide-ranging. They received fresh impetus and important new momentum with the official visit to Tanzania by Federal President, Gauck, and Ms Schadt in February 2015. This applies in particular to the business sector, which was represented during the visit by a high-ranking business delegation and proclaimed its interest in a substantial expansion of trade and investment relations. By attending a session of the Joint Committee of Religious Leaders for Peace and Tranquility in Zanzibar, Federal President Gauck opened up new prospects for relations with the Zanzibar Archipelago. By reviewing the projects of the Frankfurt Zoological Society in the Serengeti National Park, he reaffirmed Germany’s leading role in protecting biodiversity and combating poaching. He provided high-level backing to Germany’s engagement in an environment characterised by strongly conflicting interests. 

Bilateral cultural relations focus on academic exchange, cultural preservation projects and promoting school and popular sport in Tanzania. A lighthouse project in academic cooperation is the Tanzanian-German Centre for Eastern African Legal Studies at the University of Dar es Salaam, which is run in cooperation with the University of Bayreuth. The Goethe Institute in Dar es Salaam offers language courses and cultural programmes, which gives it a very high profile there. The 2016 exhibition on the German colonial era at the German Historical Museum is being mounted in cooperation with the National Museum and National Archives of Tanzania in Dar es Salaam.
