Steinmeier Awarded German Football Ambassadors and Opened the “Football Spanning the Globe” Exhibition

News from Berlin – On Monday evening, German Minister of Foreign Affairs Frank Walter Steinmeier opened the exhibition “Fußball weltweit” (Football Spanning the Globe) in the German Foreign Ministry. In cooperation with the Goethe Institute Rio de Janeiro, the Ministry shows exhibits from the DFB archive and the German Football Museum in occasion of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Besides opening the exhibition, Steinmeier also awarded the German Football Ambassador 2014. German coaches and players that contributed to a positive image of Germany in the world are nominated. The winners receive prize money which is to be sponsored to charity projects. Monika Staab, who is currently coaching the national women’s team of Qatar, was the one to receive it. She has been elected by a jury of various important personalities in the sports sector.

In addition, André Schürrle has been nominated by more than 37,000 voters worldwide to win the People’s Choice Prize 2014. Those interested can vote for one of the German national team players to win the prize. Also Rudi Gutendorf, who has coached more than 50 teams such as the national teams of Australia, China, Bolivia and Rwanda, received an honorary certificate for his work.

The exhibition is open to everyone interested from May 6 until July 18, Monday to Friday, 8.00 to 19.00.
