News from Berlin - Last weekend, State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Brigitte Zypries paid a visit to Qatar. During her stay, she met with the Minister for Economy and Trade as well as with high ranking representatives of the Qatar Foundation and the IT industry. At the Information and Communication Technology Exhibition and Conference (Qitcom) she held a speech concerning the influence of social media on politics. She stated that Germany and Qatar have enjoyed a year-long economic communication: Qatari investors have invested a lot in Germany, and German entrepreneurs are active in Qatar. The country has developed into a leader in the field of Information and Communication Technology. This is why the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) wants to help German companies and research institutes to build relationships with Qatar. The two countries co-operate in other areas as well: Germany takes part in the planning and building of many infrastructure projects in Qatar.

Qatar is one of the smallest countries in the Middle East, but is nonetheless one of the fastest growing and among the ten richest ones world-wide. The trade volume between Qatar and Germany amounted to approximately two million euros in 2013 (of which 762 million in imports to Germany and 1.23 billion in exports to Qatar).
