"Festival Brings Filipino films to Theatres in Cologne and Munich"

The Sentro Rizal Berlin and the National Commission organized the Festival for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in cooperation with: Artikulo Uno Productions, the Philippine Consulates in Bavaria and North Rhine Westphalia, the European Network of the Filipino Diaspora (ENFID), Katolisches Bildungswerk, Friends e.V., Babaylan Germany e.V., Philippinische Katolische Gemeinde Köln, and Filipiniana e.V. München.

After a series of successful screenings in Asia, NCCA’s Sentro Rizal went to Europe to connect Filipinos abroad to their cultural roots. The Film Festival made its debut in Germany on 18th of May 2016 at the Dom Forum in the center of Cologne with Ida Del Mundo’s period piece, k’na The Dreamweaver. It was followed by screenings of Jerrold Tarog’s acclaimed bio-epic Heneral Luna at the Film Forum in Cologne and Enzo William’s Historical action drama Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo in the Rio Filmpalast in Munich. The Festival attracted a crowd of more than 2000 attendees; moreover, films were warmly received by Philippine community, they outlined that ‘’Having this films in Germany is very important for them as it helps them not to lose the track of the history’’.

Sentro Rizal’s role in promoting Philippine art, culture and language was introduced by Consul Rona Beth Goce. Philippine Ambassador to Germany Melita Sta.Maria-Thomeczek acknowledged important role of the Filipino community in the process of organization of Sentro Rizal Film Festival in Germany. She welcomed the audience and held speech before the screening of Heneral Luna. Philippine Consulates in Bavaria and North Rhine Westphalia helped local Filipino organizations to promote and organize the film displaying in their cities.
