An unprecedented live music event bringing together nineteen musicians from Greece, Russia, Ethiopia, Lebanon and India in order to explore their 21st-century perspective on their profound musical heritage.

An unprecedented musical event presents a new perspective on the sacred music of Eastern and Orthodox Christianity. And its last stop is happening this week at Babylon in Berlin, after a tour that has led the artists to London and then Paris.

The Christian tradition is slowly dying out in the Middle East region. The musical religious traditions which are deeply rooted in this area are being progressively abandoned. Sacred Imaginations aims to bring this music to the most prominent capitals of Western Europe for all to enjoy and discover. Mixing the old and the new, the project is curated by British-Indian musician Susheela Raman, who was a contender for the Mercury Music Prize in 2001, and producer and guitarist Sam Mills. For this event the pair have brought together musicians from ‘orthodox and oriental religious and musical traditions’.

Performers  come from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Greece, Syria and Armenia amongst others, as well as Samuel Yirga, the Ethiopian pianist of Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records’ fame and Doros, a Moscow vocal quintet and frequent performer in St Basil’s Cathedral. All of these musicians are rooted in the sacred music of Eastern Christianity, spanning borders and now gathered together in one location.

By bringing together different communities and cultures under one banner, this initiative succeeds in transcending differences and borders.
