From the 14th of August to the 26th of September the RuhrTriennele International Arts Festival is taking place in the Ruhr area of Germany. Over six weeks former industrial buildings in this old industrial area of Germany will be hot to a number of performances and art installations. These will take place in locations such as former power stations, dumps and wastelands that are left over from the coal industry that was formerly very active in the area.

This event takes place yearly and transforms the old industrial sites in the area into vibrant and creative spaces where artists from all over the world come to showcase their work. This is a way for contemporary artists seeking dialog between different disciplines and with industrial spaces.

From 2015 onwards the art festival will be taking place under the artistic guidance of the Dutch Director Johan Simons. He has a three year program under the theme of “Seid umschlungen”, be embraced, which is a gesture of social, political and geographical embracement. The performance venues include the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum, the zollverein World Heritage Site Essen, the Duisberg-Nord Landscape Park and, for the first time in 2015, the mixing hall of the Lohberg colliery in Dinslaken.

This festival has been running annually since 1999 and has increased in size and prestige every year attracting more and more high profile and well-known artists.
