News from Berlin. According to the recently published Woman-on-Board-Index, 17.2 per cent of the Board of Directors of 160 DAX companies - German publicly listed companies - are female. In the previous year, the number of women amounted to 15.8 per cent. Additionally, the number of women with management functions increased to 6 per cent.

The German Minister of Family Affairs Manuel Schwesig claimed that women are still discriminated against in the labor market. However, this phenomenon is on the decline.

Only half of the 160 companies offer concrete goals to increase the number of women in their Board of Directors. According to Monika Schulz-Strelow, chairwoman of “Verein Frauen in die Aufsichtsräte”, an association to promote women in Boards of Directors, there is not enough pressure for companies to raise that number.

In 2016, one third of newly employed people in the Boards of the DAX companies have to be female. The German government pursues this goal by introducing a new regulation regarding a defined quota of women in Boards of Directors applicable to the DAX companies.
