News from Berlin – The infamous Sølvguttene (the Boys of Silver), a Norwegian choir for boys, will be touring through Germany in October 2014 and will be performing in Berlin on Saturday 4 October at the Berliner Dom.

The tour schedule comprises of performances in Hamburg Leipzig and Berlin. On Wednesday 1 October, the choir gave a free concert at the Berlin Nordic Embassies in the Felleshus. The concert was a great success as attendees enjoyed the sweet and dulcet tones of one of the best choirs in the world.

The Sølvguttene was founded in 1940 by Torstein Grythe. The choir initially began rehearsing in Gythe’s apartment in Oslo, however they were soon given the opportunity to rehearse in Norwegian Broadcasting’s (NRK) facilities. The choir’s first radio performance was held in December 1940. However, during the German occupation it became impossible for the choir to continue cooperation with the NRK. In 1947, the NRK created its own boy’s choir and Torstein Grythe was invited to conduct this new choir. In the early 1960s a merger took place and the original choir and the new choir began working together in perfect harmony.

This merger was a fantastic boost for both choirs and in 1970 the newly formed choir won its class in BBC’s Let the People Sing contest. Since the contest, the choir has had a massive boost in popularity and has become an important institution in Norway, with many performances on the radio and television in Norway and all over the world.

The choir is so greatly admired, that boys are willing to travel up to 100kms to participate in rehearsals twice a week.

Sølvguttene have been invited to sing at many official events such as the closing ceremony of the Lillehammer Olympic Games. The Norwegian Boys Choir was first on tour in Germany in 2006 and so we are happy to welcome back this spectacular group to Berlin. The choir has experienced a tough journey and so it is fantastic to see that they have put the past behind them and have pulled through to achieve great success and grace us with a repertoire or Norwegian and international music.
