It is not only one of the beautiful places in Germany but also in Europe. Located in Bavaria, near the town of Fussen, the castle is the most visited castle in Germany, also because of its extraordinary, almost fairytale design.

This unusual building was created in the XIX century. By this time castles no longer had any strategic or military purpose and thus beautiful architecture was a focus in the creation of this castle. Neuschwanstein Castle was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, also called “The Fairytale King”. He was known for his fascination for Ludwig Wagner's music and this love for music of the famous German compositor is reflected in the castle’s interiors. King Ludwig paid for the palace out of his own fortune. After just two years on the Bavarian throne he was forced to hand over his power to the Prussians. That was probably one of the reason why he decided to devote himself to the fine arts. In his castle he enjoyed being surrounded by myths, legends, art and music instead of politics and economics.

Visitors to the castle can feel the extraordinary atmosphere of the place especially in the castle's finest rooms – the Singer's Hall and the Hall of the Holy Grail in which tourists can experience the nostalgia for the Middle Ages. In Ludwig's sleeping quarters they can admire interiors inspired by Gothic art and details reflected Ludwig’s fascination for famous Wagner operas. Another thing that makes this castle even more attractive are its beautiful surroundings, Bavarian mountains, hills, forests and green areas. King Ludwig chose probably the best place in Germany to situate his castle, now visited every year by tourists from across the globe. These are probably also the reasons why the castle was an inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle and many others.

The beautiful, idyllic situation of the castle, its fascinating interiors and the story of King Ludwig, who created the castle to hide himself from the eye of the public, all these characteristics ensure that the building is extremely interesting for tourists. It has become a symbol of romantic architecture but also fascinating spirit. Dedicated to a King, who devoted himself to the fine arts, Richard Wagner, famous music and history of the Middle Ages.
