Germany’s development minister Gerd Müller said earlier last month that Africa can become self-sufficient and it’ll be Germany that looks to drive this forward through modernizing their agricultural sector. Müller’s ministry is set to €80 million over the next 2 years into the agriculture business to provide for various equipment and training.

Already the first projects have started on the continent, with Ethiopia already enjoying masses of resources as part of the German Government’s Green Innovation Centers. The centers are based upon German skills and knowledge in agriculture and German companies and research institutions have been teaching locals cultivation techniques and proper uses of pesticides. As well as providing education on German types of agriculture, machinery has been provided to suit their needs of the new farming techniques.

The hopes of Müller and the German government as a whole is of course to unlock the African continent's huge resource potential in order to assist them to become self-sufficient and less reliant on further foreign investments. The Sub Saharan region especially has a massive hunger problem which needs to be remedied and the German government are striving to boost their financial capabilities through heavy investment. This includes 10 Green Centers, 10 agricultural vocational training centers as well as other projects which amass to 1.2 billion euros a year.

Despite some experts advising that German and European forms of agriculture on the whole would be inappropriate in an African setting, the countries cooperating in the projects have widely met the developments enthusiastically. Projects like the Green Energy Centers provide the region with a chance to show it can develop intelligently and sustainably which will greatly enhance its profile on the global stage.
