Mohandas Karamchad Gandhi is widely recognized as one of the greatest political and spiritual leaders of the 20th century and he was born 150 years ago, on October 2nd, 1869. He was lawyer, politician, social activist and writer. He came to be considered as the father of India and a symbol for Indian culture, explaining the reason for his name “Mahatma” (“Great Soul”). His personality, thoughts and policy of nonviolent protest (Satyagraha) enabled him to have a global impact. Leaders who have fought for civil rights worldwide - from Martin Luther King Jr. to Nelson Mandela - recognize Gandhi as the inspiration for their struggle to achieve equal rights for their people.

The Indian Embassy’s commemoration related to Gandhi’s life is extremely important, in order to remember a man that fought for human rights and global peace by fostering exchange and dialogue between different cultures.
