Tsvetelina Tomova - Loic Breard comes from France, where he studied painting and sculpting at Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. He then relocated to Hamburg, and in 1998 decided to dedicate himself to photography. He exclusively uses black and white techniques and focuses on topics related to portrait, report, landscape and architecture. His work takes him to many a remote area around the world.
Ägypten – Im Spiegel der Zeitlosigkeit“ was the first of his works to go on display in Hamburg, in January this year. The official opening of the exhibition in the Egyptian embassy took place on April 23rd. The photographs on display are the final product of twenty years of work which was completed with persistence and increasing interest in the culture and people of the regions in which he was working. The number of photos on display totals over seven thousand, a number that speaks for itself.
In his photographs, Breard tries to capture the people in their best and most authentic light. How they live their everyday life, how they organize their world, how they communicate; these are his interests. Through his camera, he encounters people in a truly intimate way and can understand them, even without knowing their language. And they also understand him – he speaks to the people through the camera, through his art. He said the best pictures are when you get close to the people.
He wants to bring these people to the public’s attention, who are the actual treasures of those lands. His projects aren’t only in Egypt – he wants to emphasize that the most important thing in every foreign or domestic land are the people. And travelers seem to forget that so frequently. Through his methods, Loic Breard seeks to remind his audiences of that, and hopes that never again will it be forgotten.
