From January 31st to March 21st 2015, an exhibition of Italian artist Agnese Purgatorios’ latest work, sponsored by the Italian Cultural Institute, is being held at the headquarters of Podbielski Contemporary, Berlin. The artists most recent series, “Learning by Heart”, is showcased for the first time in Berlin. Curated by renowned Professor Martina Corgnati, the exhibition comprises of pieces on the exodus of the Armenian people in the early 20th Century, and focuses on the experience of exiled people, who no longer have a home. A focus on 20th century Armenia is the essence of Purgatorio’s work.

Her photography, videos and installations shape the poetic and fundamentally artistic project of exile and those who experience it. Purgatorio works through the use of digital medium, and this exhibition is no exception. All of her artworks follow a same pattern where images are always constituted of the same components. These components literally migrate from one location to another and from one role to another, each time creating a new reality and reflecting, in this case, the situation of those exiled. This choice of style is a metaphor for the artist’s personal life experiences.

Born in Bari, Purgatorio lives between Belgrade and Beirut. Since 1990 she has shared her work, both around Italy and abroad. In 2014, she held several exhibitions in the Italian Cultural Institutes in Cologne, Strasbourg, Tirana and Zagreb. She also previously displayed her work in prestigious institutions and at international events such as the Biennale of Contemporary Art in Moscow, exhibiting her Special Project (2013), the ' Armenian Center for Contemporary Experimental Art in Yerevan, the Espacio de Arte Contemporáneo of Montevideo and the Museum of Contemporary Art of La Plata (2012).
