On the evening of January 22nd, the ceremony for the International Light Art Award (ILAA) will take place at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele. The competition is an initiative of the Centre for International Light Art Unna and RWE Foundation and its aim is to support and promote light artists, as well as the genre of light as a whole. The prize will be awarded to highly promising artists, whose works will contribute to the development of light art in an innovative and creative way.

A recommendation committee was formed by museum directors, curators, artists, academics, and collectors from all over the world and each of them suggested two possible nominees, who were asked to hand in a concept for a light art installation. A jury of seven internationally renowned light art experts had selected three finalists; the Cologne artists Martin Hessel Meier & Andreas Muxel, the Chilean contemporary artist Iván Navarro and the sculptor Dirk Vollenbroich, who will be awarded this evening.

In the context of the "International Year of Light" proclaimed by UNESCO, the focus of the evening will be around the theme of light and light art. In this way, the Centre for International Light Art wishes to provide a platform for future generations of light artists. New technologies, energy usage, and sustainability are key aspects in this competition. The ceremony will be accompanied by an interactive discussion in cooperation with the Monopol-Magazin, in order to trigger an active dialogue about the future of light art.

The prize winner will be awarded with € 10.000. The artists in the first, second and third place will receive financial support in order to realize their artistic works and they will exhibit them from January 25th to June 28th 2015 at the Centre for International Light Art Unna. The centre was founded in 2001 and is the world’s only museum dedicated to the presentation of light art.
