August 04th, 2015On the 29th of July the artist Hedva Ser installed her sculpture, the 9th Tree of Peace, in the Garden of Nations. Andreas Geisel, the Senator for Urban Development, along with officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs gathered to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Israel and Germany.
Hedva Ser is a French artist who was born in Israel. Her artistic works include tapestries, jewelry and paintings, but she is primarily known for her imposing sculptures. Her bronze statues are inspired by nature and aim to promote peace and tolerance. The aims of her work were recognized when she was awarded the title of UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2011. These artists use their influence and their artworks to promote peace and cultural exchanges worldwide.
The Tree of Peace is a bronze sculpture which symbolizes peace amongst nations and individuals. It has also become the emblem of UNESCO. Hedva Ser incorporated symbols from the 3 monotheistic religions (Christianity, Islam and Judaism) and Buddhism; with shapes from the Hebrew and Arabic words for “Peace”, as well as a dove. The branches of the tree reach to the sky in a hopeful manner. The artist has installed 8 other Trees of Peace in other symbolic places. The tree in Berlin was grown from the same seed as the tress installed at the Universities of Harvard, Philadelphia and Jerusalem, and in Malta, Andorra, and Azerbadjian. The trees are planted in public spaces; inviting passers-by to reflect upon and cherish peace.
This sculpture epitomizes the way in which art can contribute to cultural diplomacy. Indeed, in their various locations across the world, the Trees of Peace are able to bring people together. Through the universal language of art, they reach out to individuals from different cultures and deliver an important message.
