German Foreign Ministry Sends Out Volunteers

The Foreign Ministry of Germany sends many young volunteers abroad every year, as part of its “kulturweit” project

Julia Brückner - The Foreign Ministry of Germany sends many young volunteers abroad every year, as part of its “kulturweit” project. Young people between the ages of 18 and 26 years old can apply to volunteer abroad for 6 or 12 months in one of the projects supported by the German Foreign Ministry, in the fields of either culture, development or education. “Kulturweit” was founded 5 years ago in cooperation with the German UNESCO Corporation. Amongst the goals of the project are the development of intercultural understanding, increase of interest with regards to social and civil engagement, improvement of international dialogue and cooperation, creation of sustainable networks in the international field of culture and education, the spreading an image of Germany as a country with exciting and varied cultural and educational policies, and increasing Germany’s contributions to UNESCOs global projects. 

UNESCO development project areas include Africa, Asia and Latin America as well as in Central, South-East and Eastern Europe. The Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst (DAAD), the Deutsche Archäologische Institut (DAI), the Deutsche Welle Akademie (DW), the Goethe Institut (GI), the Pädagogische Austauschdienst (PAD) and the Center for Auslandsschulwesen (ZfA) as well as the UNESCO National Commission all work to recruit the young people who are so crucial to the survival oft he projects.

During their work, the volunteers participate in a large variety of projects. They improve their intercultural understanding and make global connections and friendships, as well as experiencing different living and working styles. The new experiences prove very valuable for their futures.

To qualify, applicants have to be fluent German speakers, should have lived in Germany the last 2-3 years (German citizenship is not required), have either Abitur or Hauptschul-/mittlere Reife with additional education, have a valid passport, should be healthy and must apply between the 1st April and 5th May 2015 (http://www.kulturweit.de/de/bewerbung/voraussetzungen.html).
