Das Traumschiff: Sambia, a film about Zambia, was aired on a German public television station ZDF this Easter. The film highlights Zambia’s most iconic tourist attractions, such as the Victoria Falls, and is hoped to boost tourism in the country.

The film was mainly filmed in Livingstone and it portrays a beautiful tourist attraction with such animals as elephants, lions, cheetahs and leopards. There are recognizable places in the film such as the Royal Livingstone with its traditional welcome party of dancing and singing Zambians dressed in Chitenge shirts, a national fabric.

The 94-minute film features German actors and it is estimated to have reached an audience of over ten million people. The film is a part of the annual episodes that have run on German TV since 1935 under the theme, “Das Traumschiff” or “Dreamboat” showcasing selected tourism destinations from different parts of the world, mostly as a love story.

The Ambassador of Zambia to Germany, H.E. Amb. Anthony Mukwita, described the film as a true reflection of Zambia’s tourism heritage and hospitality. He is confident that the film helps tell the good story of Zambia and thus boost the flow of German tourists as well as potential investors to Zambia. German tourists have a huge spending power of close to a hundred billion euros annually and they rank the most traveled European tourists in the world.

“Zambia came out alive and as a compelling tourism and investment destination”, the Zambian envoy said and added: “We need to encourage more international film producers to shoot their films in Zambia. This is the market we need to cultivate and a film on Zambia’s tourism heritage on a German television in German language is a bonus for us.”

The film provides a big boost to President Edgar Lungu’s efforts to make Zambia known globally as a good tourism and investment destination. Recent efforts have been made by the Ministry of Tourism and Arts through the Zambia Tourism Agency, ZTA, to encourage German tourists to visit Zambia.
