At the beginning of the year, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture put in execution a Rural Development Scheme. The main aim of the project is to support rural areas and being out the best of their vibrant and appealing regions. Nearly half of Germany’s population lives in rural areas thus the problem has been prioritized. In the coalition agreement, the Government states that ‘living conditions in cities and rural areas have to be equalized’.

The Federal Rural Development Scheme was launched at the beginning of this year with a focus on giving support to innovative rural development strategies. The main purpose of the project is to keep local communities attractive and to assist structurally disadvantaged regions. The program includes four main modules.

The first module is focused on developing innovative future-oriented strategies and solution concepts for specific issues. This year rural development stakeholders will be given the opportunity to come up with innovative solution concepts and new methodologies. The second module is going to be a project called “Rural uprising”. This is a specific measure with a defined target for structurally disadvantaged areas. It is dedicated to reaching entrepreneurs. The main problems that this module has to deal with are demographic change, the increasing value-added, rural employment amongst others.

The third module involves a competition where the good examples of agricultural development projects will be rewarded. Finally, the fourth part of the scheme is going to be a research and knowledge phase. It plans to gather all the research and findings on the development of the rural areas and to make them available on a special research platform. A support for future researches in the field of rural development will be included.
