In Berlin from 5.11.2015 – 31.1.2016 an exhibition will take place called Fratzen/Carotas. All interested can visit Niebuhrstraße 59/60, Charlottenburg, 10629.

José Marques Torrent in his works alludes to Spanish Bonfires of Saint John. It is the traditional celebration in honor of San Juan (St. John the Baptist) and takes place on the evening of the23rd of June. Bonfires are lit and a fireworks display usually takes place. One of the centers of the festival is in Ciutadella, where this feast has been celebrated from the fourteenth century.

The main item of the celebrations is the horse. During this festival a paradetakes place with people dressed in black and white, riding horses, showing off their skills and dancing to the rhythm of the typical songs. The riders are equipped with wood used for combat which are painted in a grotesque fashion. The shields are called Fratzen/Carotas and are issued for only one day and destroyed during the fighting. The fragments are popular trophies.

José Marques Torrent has 30 years of experience as a professional ballet dancer. His grandfather José Roberto Torrent Prats (1904 - 1990) was an internationally recognized painter as well as an honorary citizen of Ciutadella. For over 20 years, José Marques Torrent has dealt with the estate of his grandfather and shaped numerous exhibitions of his work in Spain and Germany.

Usually during the process of creating carotes, José Marques Torrent sits down, music on in the background, and starts to develop new choreography. If he doesn't remember how the ‘grimace’ is supposed to look, he relies on impulses from the world of dance. Sometimes he asks his grandfather if he likes what he is doing. He has never said no.
