The Brazilian Embassy in Berlin, together with Galeria Canoa, organizes the exhibition “Contemporary Baroque” by the Brazilian artist Sérgio Ramos from 14/06/2019 to 26/07/2019.

The artist and architect Sérgio Ramos displayed his works in about 80 exhibitions in more than 28 years of career. Currently, the artist resides in the historic city of Tiradentes, Minas Gerais, where he has an atelier and an art gallery. His works are strongly influenced by the Minas Baroque and marked by a playful characteristic, that is evident at first glance. Sérgio Ramos studied architecture, and combining his academic knowledge with his classical view of the arts, he creates paintings inspired by literature, music, architecture and everyday elements. His creations – representations of his own reality – allow for different interpretations from the observer.

“Barroco Mineiro” is a name given to a peculiar version of the Baroque style in Brazil’s colonial period, between the beginning of the 18th century and the end of the 19th century. The exuberance of forms and drama are two of its main characteristics. The main themes are the sacred representation, aristocracy and the daily life of the cities.

Galeria Canoa is a meeting place for art, creativity, and culture. It seeks to present the most expressive Brazilian contemporary art to the European eyes.
