Berlin iconic Brandenburg Gate, where David Hasselhoff famously sang for freedom a year before officials allowed East Germans back into the west of Germany in 1989, will be the spot for his performance on New Years Eve this year.

David Hasselhof, also known as the Hoff, is famous for his role in the series Baywatch. He is an American actor, singer, producer and businessman. Aside from his acting and singing career, Mr Hasselhoff is renowned for his engagement in Berlin’s history. He is remembered by many Germans for his performance of “Looking for Freedom” shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Furthermore last year Hasselhof joined protesters in Berlin against the plans to remove parts of the colorfully painted parts of the Berlin Wall’s longest remaining stretch; the East Side Gallery. According to Markus Behren, a member of David Hasselhof’s fan community; the Hoff Army fan community, “many of our members from former East Germany say that ‘Looking for Freedom’ had a big impact on their lives.”

Hasselhoff will fly from London on New Years Eve to perform alongside singer Tony Christie, violinist David Garrett and German rock bad Tokio Hotel. According to NBC News, Hasselhoff “will be one of the top acts on December 31st.” Other starts will be present at the Brandenburg Gate for the countdown to 2015, including classical singer Katherine Jenkins and former Communards star Jimmy Somerville.

Berlin will have a two day celebration, which annually draws large crowds of up to one million people.
