The Chinese film titled “Crosscurrent” or “Chang Jiang Tu” in Chinese will compete at this year´s 66th Berlin International Film Festival, which is also widely known as the Berlinale and is one of the most reputable media events and one of the world´s “Big Three” film festivals, along with Venice and Cannes. The competition this year´s lineup includes 19 world premieres with 21 participating countries and regions.

The film Crosscurrent has been shortlisted for the Berlinale competition programme, along with 22 other films. Crosscurrent will compete for the Golden or Silver Bear awards and will be the only Chinese film competing for this year´s Berlinale. The film´s genre is drama and is defined as a magical-realism love story set on a boat sailing on the Yangtze River. Some other critics said it is like a spiritual journey, a state description and an inventory of modern China. At the same time you can see the film as a meditation, for example, when the hero immersed in the verses of an unknown poet, which showed him the secrets of his past and brought him to think about crime and punishment. The director of the film, Yang Chao, won the Golden Camera Special Mention at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004, for his film Passages.

The film “Hail, Caesar!” will also feature in this year´s Festival on February 11th, with Hollywood stars like George Clooney, Josh Brolin, Ralph Fiennes and Scarlett Johansson known to be attending. American actress Meryl Streep, three-time Oscar winner, will serve as jury president of the seven-member international panel, which will decide who will receive the Golden Bear and Silver Bear awards.
