News from Berlin - Germany is China’s most important European trading partner, and Xi Jinping’s visit to the country today and tomorrow aims both to emphasise this, as well as to further strengthen the economic ties between the two countries even more. Jinping states that cooperation between China and Germany could open the world to enormous possibilities in terms of growth. This is Xi Jinping’s first visit to Germany since he took office in 2013. His visit will last two days, during which he will meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Joachim Gauck. Also still on his agenda is a visit to the EU headquarters in Brussels.

Jinping’s visit of Europe coincides with the visits of US President Barack Obama and South Korean President Park Geun-hye. Whilst Obama’s visit aims to show the world that the EU and US still stand united against a perceived Russian threat, Geun-hye’s and Jinping’s visit are mainly economic in nature.China has always championed national sovereignty, and abstains from interfering in other countries’ internal conflicts.
