Bilateral Reunion of the Secretaries of State for European Issues

Fernando Eguidazu, New Secretary of State for the European Union, Visited Berlin on July 29th for a Meeting with his German Counterpart, Michael Roth, the German Minister for Foreign Affairs.

The meeting took place in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, where both Secretaries of State were accompanied by their respective delegations and had the chance to analyze the German-Hispanic cooperative relations.

The meeting mainly focused on the issues that involve the European Union. The political discussion was based on three pillars: reinforcing EU institutions, the Greek financial crisis, and perspectives of the European Union for the coming years, putting special attention on economic and monetary policy.

After this initial reunion, Eguidazu, at Roth’s invitation, was reunited with his German and French peer, Harlem Désirn at Villa Borsig, the headquarters of the German Diplomatic School. Whilst there, the three European representatives highlighted the importance of developing a program that will manage to achieve better economic and monetary policy. The main discussion was based around a report given by the five presidents to the European Council about the governance of the Eurozone.

During these meetings, all the Secretaries of State concluded that the European Union has to focus on economic development, employment, and increasing foreign investment.

In addition, the Spanish Secretary of State met the German Secretary for Foreign Affairs to exalt the good relations that currently exists between the two countries. A relationship characterized by the deep roots that keep them together.

The visit ended with an informal discussion with the students of the German Diplomatic School.
