News from Berlin - On Saturday April 12th 2014, the people behind the Leihladen Berlin project took part in a discussion regarding the economic situation in Berlin and whether social happiness requires a situation that is different to the one we are currently faced with which is a seemingly unequal society; does this spark signals of distrust in the market and the state?

Berlin has become a city of innovation and creativity and often referred to as “poor but sexy” and this image is further enhanced by ideas such as the “borrowing shop” or “Leihladen” as it is known to locals here in Berlin.

Maike Majewski and Nikolai Wolfert founded the ‘shop’ in the North East of Berlin in Fehrberlinner Strasse.  In order to become a member you must first donate an item of your own and then you are welcome to borrow any other items for no fee at all.

This scheme would be well received in other areas across Germany, Europe and the World as it can save a lot of people a lot of money especially as their most popular items are power tools which aren’t used very often to make them worthwhile.

Since its opening in 2012, there have been numerous similar projects opening up all across Germany which demonstrates the efficiency and usefulness of the idea.
