Spaghetti Story (2013)

2014 was a good year for Italian cinema, culminating with the Academy Award for “La Grande Bellezza” by Paolo Sorrentino. Though many other were the films produced. The 17th edition of Cinema! Italia! presents six of them in a tour across Germany.

31 German cities from Kiel to Munich, to Cologne and Dresden, will host a traveling programme of German premieres. Started on September 12th, the tournée will finish tomorrow with screenings in the Berlin theatres Babylon and Bali-kino. Well-known directors as Gianni Amelio or Edoardo Winspeare go along with promising new names, as well as the directorial debut of star actress Valeria Golino. This year’s festival presented films that deal with ethical and social issues in the daily lives of people who, despite everything refuse to come to terms and keep fighting.

Be they smooth-running comedies or dramas, the unifying element of the films of “Cinema! Italia! 2014”, is the decision to deal mainly with reality. These works represent a cinema that faces the complexity of our time in deciding to show things as they truly are: with all their ambiguities and contradictions. A cinema, not trying to simplify these issues, nor meet the expectations of a comforting “happy ending”.

Deserving a special mention is the film “Spaghetti Story”, the first work of Ciro De Caro and one of the greatest surprises of last season. A low-budget film produced with a total cost of 15,000 euros and 11 days of shooting, “Spaghetti Story” succeeds in representing with authenticity the problematic situation of the younger generations.

“Cinema! Italia!” is funded by Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali e del Turismo, the Italian Agency for Foreign Trade and the Italian Cultural Institutes. Patronised by the Italian Ambassador to Germany, H.E. Elio Menzione. The venues will be BABYLON at Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße 30, 10178 Berlin and BALI-KINO at Teltower Damm 33, 14169 Berlin.
