The Embassy of Japan in Berlin would like to invite you to a cultural lecture on October 18th 2018 to discuss the development of wordings and dictionaries from Japan and Germany.

The public evening event is focused on the annual theme 2017 | 18 "Language" organized by the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities in cooperation with the Freie Universität Berlin and the DFG, German Research Foundation - Berlin Office.

The fascinating story about the linguistic journey between Japan and Germany begins on the German side already in 1792, while in Japan it’s comparatively late, in 1862. More than 1,000 dictionaries have been published between the two countries since the emerging point. But only now, in the 21st century, Around the World In 60 Days - The "Great Japanese-German Dictionary" in three volumes which is the largest project of its kind has been recently completed. The masterpiece invites readers to explore the linguistic journey around the globe. In three short lectures and a panel discussion, the dictionary content and other language aspects will be examined.
