The annual Global Solutions Summit held by the Global Solutions Initiative brought together international research organizations, thought-leaders and decision-makers from political, business and civic communities.

This year, the Global Solutions Summit focused on the priorities of the Japanese G20 Presidency, including policy recommendations on sustainable development, infrastructure finance, financial architecture, trade and investment, climate change, future of work and education, social cohesion and the future of politics, SME policy, policies for aging populations, and more.

As a convinced advocate of multilateralism, Angela Merkel urged the reformation of the WTO which needs to take account not only of getting rid of trade barriers and tariffs but also of the non-tariff barriers, such as environmental requirements, health protection or different technical standards.

In the midst of the Huawei scandal, concerning cybersecurity, the German Chancellor stated that 5G technology is harder to police and Germany is tightening requirements for companies that want to supply the technology whether they’re from China or elsewhere. Merkel added that a joint European solution to the Huawei issue “would be desirable.”

The summit is supposed to serve as a stepping stone to the Japanese T20 Summit in May 2019 and the Japanese G20 Summit in June 2019. Approximately 1,600 participants from various sectors and 120 countries have attended the summit.
