The Film Festival Cottbus was established in 1991, just after the collapse of the Iron Curtain. It is regarded as one of the most important film festivals in the region of Central Eastern Europe. Due to the unique location of Cottbus, the city is perceived as the cultural bridge between West and East. Since 1991, it has taken place annually every November and provides an opportunity to take a closer look into current film productions in the Central Eastern European Region. The Cottbus Film Festival’s goal is not only to present the newest movies, but to promote young, talented artists from the post-communist area.   

Moreover, Film Festival Cottbus provides a platform for film producers to meet and greet and has been responsible for fruitful collaborations. As a result, Film Festival Cottbus is perceived as a hallmark for consumer and the movie industry. It serves to push projects from the inception of an idea all the way to its production. Nowadays Cottbus Festival is seen as a leading festival for East European Cinema.

According to one of the most recognizable movie magazines “Variety”, Cottbus is “a must-attend European event” and has been listed in a rank of the 50 most important film festivals in the world. Cottbus Festival is perceived by Germans as the second most significant film festival. It is due to the fact that it offers a wide range of exhibitions, lectures and seminars. What also makes this festival unique is a fact that it provides convenient conditions for building friendly dialogue between nations.

The Film Festival Cottbus regularly consists of two sections: Russian day and Polish horizons. This division enables audiences to observe how diverse productions are from these countries. A popular theme of the festival is the daily lives of young people which helps to better understand the differences and similarities across the generations. In addition, the festival offers awards for the best director and the most outstanding actor and actress.
