News from Berlin - Sixty years after its founding the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen “Konrad Wolf” in Potsdam is finally recognized as university. Overall, 5, 000 people have studied the film business including producing and directing, acting and writing screenplays.

In an interview for Deutsche Welle, Susanne Strümer, director of the newly named Film University, shared her vision about the institution ahead of time. She points out that an institution is granted the name “university” due to its wide range of topics for research and interdisciplinary work. Germany’s first film university offers 11 master’s and bachelor’s programs. “With digitalization, many new fields of research have opened up,” adds Sussane Strümer referring to the University’s new focus on interactivity and trans medial storytelling as well as a doctoral program on montage progress in film including an analysis of gender representation.

Currently, the Film University accommodates 550 students each of whom cost around 20, 000 euros ($27, 000). The student body is internationally diverse and at the moment, the university is expanding its foreign outreach as it is in contact with similar institutions in Israel, Iran, and the US.
