History

Since the beginning of the country’s democratisation in 1992, German-Ghanaian relations have been very positive.

In terms of democratic principles, good governance, the rule of law, respect for human rights and maintaining domestic stability, Ghana compares well with other countries in the region. The official visits to Berlin by Ghanaian Foreign Minister Tetteh in October 2014 and President Mahama in January 2015, the participation of President Mahama in the German-African Business Summit and the OECD’s Africa Forum in Berlin in September 2015, testify to the intensification of relations between the two countries.

There is cooperation between the Federal Armed Forces and the Ghana Armed Forces. As part of peacekeeping and crisis prevention measures, Germany is engaged in efforts to develop and stabilise regional security structures, e.g. through the work of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), which was established in 2004 with German support.
